lessons
tomorrow i start teaching sewing lessons for the very first time. i will be teaching two different classes. the first class will be 5 to 8 year olds, the second class is 9 to 17 year olds. i've got no major plans here, just winging it until i have a good feel of what these kids know and what they want to know. my one goal is to get them to LOVE sewing.
what was the turning point for you? when did you decide you loved or hated sewing?

I really got the sewing bug when I figured out how a pattern works and I could tweak it or fix my own mistakes.
ReplyDeleteOh my gosh! I would love to learn to sew! I wish I was a kid and could join your class. Do you teach adults?
ReplyDeleteI started to love it when I just dove in and didn't worry if I was screwing up. What if these kids had the chance to hear from somebody that they don't need to be ashamed of their SEAM RIPPER?! Or that mistakes sometimes lead to other, even better ideas? You'll be great--they are lucky kids.
ReplyDeleteI have always had a certain enmity toward sewing machines, but fortunately, that did not spill over into forms of handsewing, No surprise that embroidery needle, floss and hoop were my first sewing tools of choice. From there yarns, crochet hooks and knitting needles kept my hands pleased.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was pregnant with my fourth child, a girl, I finally took the time to learn to smock. After getting tired of paying and waiting for someone else to make her clothes so I could smock them, I starting sewing bishop dresses. I have gone on from there to sew about anything I want to sew. I really enjoy the art of sewing, on a sewing machine, and the more I sew the better.
Enjoy the times you teach others to sew...fun!
Have fun! I so want to learn how to sew!

I loved taking sewing with you in high school! remember?
ReplyDeleteI haven't sewn in years, but loved it when I used to make my own clothes.
so excited that you get to follow through with this idea!! sure wish noah and i could be there with you.
ReplyDeletei can't remember when exactly i first fell in love with sewing, it seems it's always been there. but i do remember the first time i realized that sewing could be a potential war zone--when my mother was cursing at her machine because the tension was all crazy. i was standing there watching and thinking, wow! i was about 7 years old i think. haha.
That's cool sis! I wish I loved sewing. I love the idea of loving sewing, so does that count?
